The Songs of Summer 2007

May 1, 2007

Ah, summertime, don’t you love it? It seems like good songs come out in the summer and define that summer. Here are a few that I think will define the summer of 2007:

“Be Good to Me” by Ashley Tisdale

I like this song a lot.  It’s kind of dying out, so I don’t know how much longevity it will have (if any) during the summer.  Listen, record company execs, if you’re scratching your head about what single to release next, please release her song “Headstrong.”  I like how she ‘borrows’ two tried and true hit song ingredients: she borrows the “Holla Back Girl” cheerleader chant and behind it there’s a Rob Base and D.J. EZ Rock “It Takes Two”-like whoop. Sounds cool. This is a fun song, and would make a great summertime song.

“Umbrella” by Rihanna

Even though Jay-Z’s intro does nothing to the song except give his stamp of approval, the rest of the song is brilliant. I love how she says “ella, ella, eh, eh” and that syncopated lyric in the chorus: “Took an oath Imma stick it out ’till the end.”  I’ll be playing it all summer.  Great lyrics, too.  Nothing to beware of- a song all can enjoy without reservation.

“Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne

I’ve already wrote about this song here and here.

“Give It To Me” by Timbaland

This song is kind of dying out around here, but I think it’ll have a resurgence as the summer comes. It sounds very good loud. I wonder how Nelly Furtado feels- this song is much better than any of the Timbaland-produced songs on her album “Loose,” in my opinion. I’m not crazy about the lyrics to be sure (the radio edited version is much more palatable than the album version), but the production is incredible. Anyone know what scary movie he sampled the music from?

Have a great summer!  Want to know how to have the best summer of your life?  Get right with God through saving faith in His son, Jesus Christ. 1Corinthians 2:9 says:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
