Tunes for Moms

May 13, 2007

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there.

I thought I’d look into the halls of rock and roll to see the treatment moms have been given in song. Unfortunately, the lyrics are pretty discouraging when moms ought to be held up and called blessed by those who’ve been given life and love. Moms are pretty incredible, and their jobs are thankless. I couldn’t find one song that would uplift and uphold motherhood. Maybe I’m missing some? Please comment!

“Mother” by Pink Floyd

(lyrics found at www.seeklyrics.com)

Momma’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true.
Momma’s gonna put all of her fears into you.
Momma’s gonna keep you right here under her wing.
She won’t let you fly, but she might let you sing.

Uh, gee, thanks, mom!

“Mamma, I’m Comin’ Home” by Ozzy Osbourne

(lyrics found at www.seeklyrics.com)

Times gone by seems to be
You could have been a better friend to me
Mama, I’m Coming Home
You took me in and you drove me out
Yeah, you had me hypnotized
Lost and found and turned around
By the fire in your eyes
You made me cry, you told me lies
But, I can’t stand to say goodbye
Mama, I’m Coming Home

I don’t know what this song is about- is he calling his wife “mama?” Some of the lyrics seem that they’re to a woman other than his birth mom. I don’t get it. Either way, it seems kind of bittersweet. Whoever he’s singing to is probably saying, “Oh, great. He’s coming back. Whoopee! (with much mock enthusiasm)”

“Mother’s Little Helper” by The Rolling Stones

This song is about mothers taking pills to deal with the daily grind of children, loser husbands, and housework. Not good.

“Mother” by The Police

(lyrics found at www.seeklyrics.com)

Well the telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
Telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
The telephone is screaming,
Won’t she leave me alone?
The telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?

Well every girl that I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Well I hear my mother calling,
But I don’t need her as a friend.
Well every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.

This is a very bizarre song among songs. The Police usually did insert a bizarre song here or there among their albums. This one is found on their Synchronicity album. And no, it’s not Sting that’s singing the lyrics. Another poor relationship between mother and son.

“Mamma Weer all Crazee Now” by Slade, made famous by Quiet Riot

(lyrics found at www.seeklyrics.com)

Ma mama weer all crazee now
Ma ma mama weer all crazee now
I don’t want to drink my whiskey like you do
I don’t need to spend my money but still do

And you told me fool firewater won’t hurt me, but you lied
And you tease me and all my ladies deserve me, I’m gonna get ‘em back

I think mamma should’ve put down the whiskey and taught her son how to spell.

“Mamma” by Genesis

I can’t see you mama
but I can hardly wait
ooh to touch and to feel you mama
oh I just can’t keep away

so get down, down here beside me
oh you ain’t going nowhere
no I won’t hurt you mama
but its getting so hard

Whoa! I can only hope that Phil Collins isn’t singing about raping his mother. Hopefully it’s only an insane guy that’s pretending he’s raping his mother. That’s better, isn’t it? Not by much. Either way, this song is disgusting. Funny how such a hitmaker can sing about such a dark topic.

Sorry to give you a pretty bleak rundown of songs about moms that are out there in rock. I’m sure I’m overlooking some positive ones. The point that I want to bring out is the fact that the fall of man has ruined everything. The most wonderful bond between mother and children is tainted with sin.

The only remedy from this curse-soaked world of sin is Christ. In Luke 5:32, Jesus says “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Come to Christ, repent of your wickedness, your poor and sinful relationship to your mother and everyone else. There’s hope at the cross of Christ.

One comment

  1. When I came across a song called “Mother” by Danzig, I was hoping for at least something ethical. Instead, I found some of the most despicable lyrics I had ever read in a non-rap song. Its grammar and punctuation are horrible, but the content is infinitely worse. (The lyrics were found at http://www.lyricsfreak.com, but I can imagine almost every other lyrics site is posting this cursèd trash.)

“Not about to see your light
But if you wanna find hell with me
I can show you what its like
    Till your bleeding”

Whoa! And, unfortunately, the only uplifting lyrics (that I found, at least) about mothers are found in a song that has the G*****n bomb in it, and the rest of the tune is pretty much senseless to me. I was fooled by Jann Arden’s title “Good Mother.” Ever since I read this, I’ve kept an ear and an eye out for anything substantial and praiseworthy toward mothers. There’s next to nothing (except that there have to be undiscovered artists out there that have their priorities aligned).
